Conservation & Outreach

Conservation became a huge part of what we do very naturally. We actually never intended to have a “Crack Team” for ghost net removals or be the people to go to for CRC programs, but we are very proud to say we do and we are !

Marine conservation, education and ecotourism are very important and rewarding elements of a scuba diving lifestyle. Many professional divers attest to the shared responsibility as ocean ambassadors to support ocean protection. As such conservation should be a key factor for their Go PRO career!

In Sabah and Borneo, ecotourism is fast becoming a popular choice to travel responsibly; and our mission, as a diving and travel business operation, is our resolute commitment in contributing to environmental health!

Our Headquarters are located in Kota Kinabalu, where our helpful travel experts design our clients an individually catered program for their holiday experiences in exotic Sabah.

Visitors to Sabah acquire, both an appreciation and awareness of the natural environment, and contribute to conservation when participating on our travel programs. We choose services of our trusted partners who are, like us, supporters and activists of ecotourism, and enact environmentally conscious company policies in an effort to protect and preserve Sabah’s natural biodiversity, as well as improve the daily lives of our local community.

Environmentally responsible policies enforced in our operations are, use of filtered water only, reducing the usage of plastic items, water and electricity. Our mainland Head Office is as paperless as possible too; no styrofoam or plastic bags allowed!

These practices were awarded by PADI with the Green Star Award, and our operations were the first Dive Centre in Malaysia to have received the honor too!

Schools and Universities

One of the highlights of the year (and we experience several!), is when groups from local and international schools and universities participate in an educational program designed by us for their needs.

The Australia International School Singapore, University of Cardiff, Mont Kiara International School and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) are just some of the educational institutes to visit Sabah and experience our educational programs.

It’s so rewarding to assist, for example, University students in their field study activities to collect data for their scientific degree, or educating corporate groups on the benefits of their positive action as they participate in beach and underwater clean-up events.

Marine Debris

Our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre is based in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and the biggest threat to our local environment is marine debris.

Beach and underwater clean-ups are daily efforts that take place at our Dive Centre on Gaya Island, even included within some programs for our clients to contribute their own efforts during their island activity.

Achieving professional dive training at our Dive Centre operations is very special for our Go PRO interns because they are invited to assist in the challenging conservation projects our island staff team organizes, such as removing illegal ‘ghost nets’. A discarded fishing net is termed a ‘ghost net’ as it continues to catch fish, which is why a team of our PADI professional island staff and Go PRO interns assemble to remove the net. We fully sponsor net removal dives, with staff and logistics, and after a decade and 120 illegal fishing net removals, we will continue our commitment to ocean protection.

Candidates enrolled on our PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) professional diving internship, are encouraged to participate in all unique learning experiences of the dive lifestyle.

Groups visiting our beach house on a marine education program, receive a presentation on the PADI AWARE Coral Reef Conservation course. Go PRO interns will join our island staff team to inspire in others the value of contributing to ocean conservation.

The PADI AWARE Shark Conservation Distinctive Specialty is popular for its support to shark awareness, and a subject our Platinum PADI Course Director is passionate about teaching. After completion of the IDC, Go PRO interns will benefit from continuing their dive education to certify in teaching more PADI Specialties.

Coral for Life

Our Downbelow-created program Coral for Life inspires our younger generation to protect our local area by understanding the long-term benefits of preserving coral.

The program offers a unique education for the participants to witness Sabah’s natural beauty and how to protect it.

During the program participants learn about the role coral plays within the environment. This interactive powerpoint presentation is followed by an in-water session conducted to observe the coral ecosystem.

PADI professional guides educate participants on the differences between healthy and damaged coral and collect some fragments to be re-planted in our artificial reef project.

Go PRO interns of course are invited to assist our PADI professionals in all organizational efforts that are required to run a conservation program and take that experience to enhance their knowledge and improve their future dive career!

An ambassador of Project AWARE

Project AWARE is a non-governmental organisation and a worldwide movement of divers focused on ocean conservation is the necessary support of the Project AWARE Foundation.

PADI is an important partner of Project AWARE and the two organizations work closely together to raise awareness about our marine environment. One important method of fundraising for Project AWARE’s worthy campaigns is through PADI’s certification card processing system.

We are a 100% AWARE partner and have been since 2011. Our team of PADI professionals teaches only PADI courses and programs at our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre and each certification includes a donation from us to Project AWARE in support of their mission.

Go PRO internship candidates can receive an upgraded Project AWARE branded certification card too! It is inspiring to become an ambassador for our ocean environment, and so rewarding when qualified as a PADI professional to inspire others to contribute in the same way!

In 2010 & 2011, the PADI Project AWARE organisation recognised our dive operations unwavering commitment to marine conservation, when we received the Project AWARE Conservation Award – Asia Pacific. This award was then replaced in 2012 with the PADI Green Star Award™ for which we were the first dive centre awarded.

The PADI Green Star Award™ is to identify to travellers those businesses that demonstrate their corporate responsibility to reduce their ecological footprint through eco-friendly practices. We believe our Go PRO interns must experience the business of a ‘green’ dive operation to live the true dive lifestyle!
